about the 2021 CARES Water Assistance Program
Q: Do I have to be past due?
A: Yes, this program is only for those who are behind on their water/sewer payments. You can be behind by one day and qualify.
Q: I am way behind on my water/sewer. How far back can you pay?
A: We can pay any charges incurred since April 1, 2020.
Q: Is there a limit on how much assistance I can receive?
A: Yes. The assistance maxes out at three consecutive months of arrearages.
Q: If I am more than three months past due, can I select the three consecutive months being paid?
A: Generally speaking, the oldest arrearages will be covered first. However, the three-month period paid can vary with the cooperation of the utility company.
Q: My water and sewer bills are from different companies. Can you help?
A: Yes. We can pay water and/or sewer to the same company or multiple companies.
Q: What’s my deadline to apply?
A: Funding is expected to go quickly and you should apply as soon as you can. As long as funding remains, we will take applications up until Dec. 31, 2021.
Q: What if I don’t have all my paperwork at the time of application?

A: You have the option of indicating you will FAX your documents or drop them off in our drop box at 936 Broadway Ave. in Lorain instead of uploading them. This will buy you a little time. You need to make getting the documents a priority as applications awaiting documentation will be passed over for processing until all required documents are submitted. In fairness to others, including those facing disconnection, we cannot hold funding. This means that applications submitted after yours may get approved and funded before yours. Move as quickly as possible to get the required documents to us so we can get you the most timely help possible while we still have funding.
Q: How will I know the status of my application?
A: You will receive emailed status alerts as your application moves through processing. Upon completion, you will receive an email confirming the amount paid to your utility company.
Q: Does my utility company have to participate?
A: Yes. We will verify your outstanding balance with your water and sewer providers.
Q: How much will you pay?
A: Amount will vary by client. The funding only permits payment for actual charges you have incurred. The assistance will bring you current for charges incurred since April 1, 2020.
Q: What if I don’t have service right now?
A: This program can help you reestablish service by paying deposits or old balances if they were incurred since April 1, 2020. Apply. Indicate on your application you are in disconnect status.
Q: What if I need something in writing?
A: You will receive both emailed and mailed confirmations of your request for assistance and confirmation of what you are awarded when complete.
Q: Why can’t I talk to someone at Community Action by phone?
A: Our funding puts limits on staff and other operating costs. The staff being paid out of the grant have been directed to processing applications to get checks out to utility companies as quickly as possible.
