County Offering Rent or Mortgage Assistance

posted 7/7/20 -- In response to COVID-19, Lorain County Commissioners have amended their CHIP program to include emergency housing assistance.

The Community Housing Impact and Preservation Program (CHIP) awards grants to municipalities, counties and similar groups to help provide or maintain housing in their communities.

The Emergency Housing Assistance Program provides up to 3 months of rent or mortgage assistance if a resident has suffered an economic hardship from COVID-19.

Funds can only be used for rent or mortgage payments for residents outside the municipalities of Elyria or Lorain. Payments will be made directly to the landlord or mortgage holder.

Applicants must have been current with their payments as of Feb. 29, 2020 and be living at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income. For a family of four, that amount is $60,800 in 2020.

Contact the Lorain County Community Development Office at 440-328-2322 for additional information.
