Oberlin Head Start Center to Close in Julyposted 5/19/14 -- While services will continue in other locations, the Oberlin Head Start Center at 12078 Leavitt Road will close effective July 31, 2014. The Lorain County Community Action Agency (LCCAA) came to the difficult decision this spring after several years of declining enrollment. It is anticipated that the number of staff positions will remain the same; staff will be reassigned to other locations.
Greater competition and the lack of transportation services were driving factors in declining enrollment. Ultimately, supporting rent, maintenance, grounds keeping, utilities, and custodial services along with staff salary and fringe left no funding available for transportation services. It was also questionable if having transportation would be sufficient to correct low enrollment.
Oberlin Center staff was informed Monday, April 28. Parents are being informed today.
“We have loved being at our Oberlin Center. After more than a decade, it is extremely difficult but necessary to make this change,” states Shauna Matelski, Head Start Director. She adds, “We are pleased to have two new collaborative partnerships and restored funding that allow services to continue in the area.” A second classroom is opening in Wellington Village Schools and a double session classroom will operate out of the Children’s Developmental Learning Center. Home Base services will also be available based on restored sequestration funding. Recruitment is currently underway. Families are able and encouraged to apply online at www.lccaa.net.
LCCAA is committed to working with parents and staff to ensure a smooth transition.
For 18 wonderful years, LCCAA’s Oberlin Head Start Center has provided a welcoming and nurturing environment for hundreds of infants, toddlers and preschoolers. There will be an open house on Thursday, May 22 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM for former students and their families to visit the center. Light refreshments will be served.
