Preparing for Read Across America Day

posted 2/20/24 -- LCCAA Head Start encourages all families to join in the excitement of National Reading Month this March and cuddle up with your child to enjoy a great book.

Classes will mark Read Across America Day while also celebrating the birth of Dr. Seuss. LCCAA Head Start sites will enjoy green eggs and ham, Dr. Seuss books and fun classroom activities to celebrate the love of reading on Friday, March 1.

Reading stories and antics about Dr. Seuss’ wonderful characters is a rite of passage, and the perfect way to get children interested in reading books. Reading to your child provides many benefits:

  • Children who are read to have significantly larger and more developed vocabulary.
  • Children learn to speak primarily by listening to their parents’ use of language. When you read to your children, they will hear good language structures and grammar usage and will naturally mimic those.
  • It is the perfect time to ask your child questions about the story and develop their critical thinking skills.
  • Children learn from their parents before anyone else. If they see you reading, they will want to mimic you and learn to read as well.
  • Reading improves language skills, which in turn improves writing skills in the future.
  • Bonding time together creates cherished memories.
  • Because every good story has a problem, reading can develop problem-solving skills.
  • Reading can increase attention span and focus. As they listen to the book, children are concentrating on the story.
