Volunteers Needed at Elyria Garden

posted 6/15/23 -- Volunteers are needed at the LCCAA sponsored community garden at the Elyria Public Library South Branch.

Getting the garden ready for its third growing season requires a lot of hands. A major crabgrass infestation was eradicated by volunteers from Road to Hope, a local organization that helps those overcoming addictions. Twelve yards of new premium soil was brought in from Barnes Nursery by a volunteer named Al and his tractor.

“Unfortunately, the irrigation system didn’t make it through the winter and was broken and leaking,” said Janet Skinner, Inventory and Sustainability Coordinator for LCCAA, adding that the fresh soil is wet and she hopes plants can go in the ground before the end of June.

“We’ll do a little bit of everything,” she said. “You can still get a lot of things in.”

Master Gardener Sue Shillig from the Ohio State University Extension office has offered her knowledge, Skinner added, including conducting a soil test.

Volunteers can join Skinner at the garden site on Monday mornings, all day Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Friday afternoons. For more information, contact Skinner at [email protected].
