By Car Changes Lives

posted 3/28/23 -- LCCAA’s By Car program changed Laterrica Smith’s life – and is helping her make a better life for her three children.

The single mother purchased a 2011 Ford Flex thanks to having each dollar of her savings matched with $3 from the program. Since purchasing her car, Smith has been able to drive her children to school, get a job at McDonald's and drive herself to classes at Lorain County Community College.

“I’m more than grateful to have people behind me to help me get where I’m going,” she said.

Smith will complete her culinary degree in May and already has multiple prospects. She learned about By Car from a friend whose son went through it.

“I would definitely recommend anybody to go through this program,” Smith said. “It’s a life changer, especially if you’re trying to do better for your young kids.”

By Car matches earned income for eligible clients who are working or in school. In partnership with OhioMeansJobs Lorain County. Participants must complete a financial class and some of OMJ’s screening tools. Upon completion, the program also pays one year of car insurance up to $2,500.
