Head Start Year Draws to Closeposted 5/13/16 -- Lorain County Head Start students will wrap up their school year next week with ceremonies that celebrate their success.
A total of 514 students will bridge to Kindergarten beginning May 13 with the Children's Development Center in Amherst. Other ceremonies will be held on May 17 and 18.
Head Start prepares children for Kindergarten by teaching literacy, language and math skills as well as physical development and social skills. Head Start children enter Kindergarten ready to learn and succeed, said LCCAA Head Start Director Shauna Matelski.
Hamilton Center parent Kimberly Marbury said she was skeptical of Head Start at first, not believing preschool was necessary for her daughter Phoenix.
"Working with her at home, reinforcing things she's learned at school has placed her on a higher level and all I can do is thank the teachers and staff at Hamilton Head Start for accepting her into the program," Marbury said.
LCCAA is now enrolling for Fall Head Start and Early Head Start classes. Children from birth to five-year-old are eligible. Recipients of TANF or SSI and homeless families are automatically eligible.
