Head Start Celebrates End of Year

posted 7/1/20 -- Our Head Start year did not end the way we wanted it to. The COVID-19 crisis closed our centers in mid-March and kept us from having our traditional bridging ceremonies.

Staff and families worked together to stay connected with phone calls, socially distanced visits and Facebook groups. In March, more than 900 packets were mailed to families with activities to keep their young learners engaged.

Instead of gathering for bridging to end the year, staff mailed out another batch of packets with achievement certificates and T-shirts. Families celebrated in a variety of ways at home and shared photos with us which have been compiled into a video already viewed dozens of times on You Tube. (Editor’s Note: the young man pictured here was inadvertently left out of the video.)

Families also received learning kits mailed directly from Lakeshore Learning and targeted for those moving on to kindergarten or those remaining in preschool for another year.

Carla Ball, a Cascade parent received her child’s kit and expressed her gratitude.

“On behalf of our family I want to take this one last opportunity to thank the teachers, administrators, and staff of Cascade Head Start for helping us navigate the uncertainty of Coronavirus/Covid-19,” she said. “All while trying to keep our preschooler engaged and learning from home to be prepared for kindergarten in the fall. And for sending this wonderful kit to keep those skills sharp over the summer. I thank you and appreciate you from the bottom of my heart.”

“Thank you all for everything you did for my Emily,” said Firelands parent Stephanie Gibelyou. “Even though the year was cut short I have no doubt that she’ll flourish in kindergarten thanks to all of you!”

Head Start Works - even remotely! We wish you all well!
