Ladybug Launch Planned at Garden

posted 8/4/22 -- Some lively ladies will be let loose in the Community Garden LCCAA sponsors in Elyria.

Garden manager Leanna Westergaard invites the public to participate in an evening lady bug launch at the garden on Sunday, Aug. 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“The evening time in the garden is the best time because it's shady and there’s a nice breeze,” Westergaard said, adding that the ladybugs are more likely to remain in the garden with an evening release.

Lady bugs aren’t the only creatures Westergaard hopes to attract this season. Her goal for the second year of the garden is a greater community participation and ownership. She wants people to know it is THEIR garden and is working to diversify the groups taking part in activities.

A pending grant will hopefully fund a kids garden designed to attract insects that will pollinate plants and a local troop of American Heritage Girls is being enlisted to build bug houses to encourage those pollinators to winter in the garden.

More than a dozen crops are planted in the garden and nearly ready to harvest. Watch the partners Facebook pages for announcements about specific harvest dates.
