Recognizing letters sets a foundation for successfully learning to read. A step-by-step approach and a variety of activities help children build this key skill.
Within our research-based curriculum at Head Start, we begin by teaching children to recognize the letters in their first name, since those are the letters they likely see most often.

The Youth Mentoring Series began in November at the Elyria Youth Sports Club with Men of Courage. Men of Courage provides mentoring for youth ages 9 to 12, most of whom are participants in the club’s sports.
Lead poisoning and exposure can lead to serious health problems in young children.
LCCAA Head Start screens all students for lead exposure each school year to find and treat issues early. Screenings will occur in early February at LCCAA Head Start centers around the county.
Stephanie Ekers is excited to continue her career making a difference as the new site administrator at LCCAA’s Head Start center in South Elyria.
Ekers has taken the reins at the programs newest center with two classrooms and 20 students.
LCCAA Head Start is engaging dads and father figures with a variety of new activities this school year.
Family Service Assistants’ Supervisor Diana Riffe and staff at Griswold Head Start lead the Men Making a Difference initiative to provide support and opportunities to network.
“We know men want to be engaged and positively impact their children,” Riffe said.
