Head Start is a comprehensive child development program funded by the federal government and the flagship program of Community Action Agencies throughout the nation. Head Start serves low-income children ages 3 to 5.

The program uses the 100% of the Federal Poverty Level for priority placement. In addition, the program can serve 35% of families whose income is between 101 and 130%.
Up to 10% of families can exceed 130% of the FPL.
Families receiving TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance, aka food stamps) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income) are automatically eligible. Homeless children and children in foster or kinship care are also automatically eligible.
Head Start also serves children with disabilities.
