LCCAA Head Start students have been working together to follow the trail of a special visitor to their classrooms.
Classes at both Firelands Head Start and Wellington Head Start read “The Gingerbread Man” or it’s variation “Gingerbread Man Loose in the School” and the next day were startled to find the character had popped out of the book and hidden in their schools!
Reading a familiar story is a great way to introduce children to the concept of “retelling.” Being able to relate or “retell” a book you’ve read is an important early reading skill.
At Firelands, students expanded on the book by creating rafts for the characters in the story, mimicking one scene where the Gingerbread Man floats away on a raft. At Wellington, they used a wide variety of art materials to decorate – or disguise – their own gingerbread man.
Day two of the lesson involved students working together to hunt for the mysterious figure.
“He left a note telling us that there were clues left around the school to help us find him,” said Firelands Site Administrator Pam Caruso. “He took us through the school only to find out that he escaped through our classroom window. He left us a fun craft to do.”
A few days later, he was spotted at Wellington but proved elusive again!
“The children had a blast looking for him,” said Teacher Brenda Robbins. “This was a great way to work together and to familiarize the students with the different parts of the classroom and school.”
