Two Find Success in BY Car Program

posted 12/16/20 -- Two Lorain County residents who recently purchased used cars urge others to consider the LCCAA BY Car program to solve their transportation needs.

Thanks to the program which matches savings from earned income, Lorain resident Jordan is driving his own used Volkswagen instead of relying on family and friends for rides.

He enjoys being able to get places on his own and is working to finish school and achieve his goals, he said.

Kayla of Elyria now has a Kia Soul to use instead of relying on a car pool, expensive rentals or an inadequate bus system.

“It hurt my pride,” she said. “But I was humble and I’m more than grateful for the BY Car program. It saved my life.”

BY Car matches earned income at a 2 to 1 ratio up to $3,999 and helps qualifying residents purchase a reliable used car for work and/or school. A financial literacy class is required of all applicants, along with a valid Driver’s License and insurance. Tips are also offered on choosing and maintaining a vehicle.

“This is a great resource for others, learning how to save, budgeting, and I definitely would recommend it to others,” she said, adding that her next goal is to save for her own home.
