LCCAA Closed for Juneteenth

posted 6/4/22 -- For the first time, LCCAA offers Juneteenth as a paid holiday for all staff. That means our offices will be closed Monday, June 20.

Several cities and groups are planning events leading up to the holiday, which officially falls on June 19.

Lorain County Community College will host a Juneteenth Jubilee from Tuesday June 14 through Friday, June 17. The kickoff event will include the unveiling of a Unity Quilt and a historical reenactment from 3 to 5 p.m.

Wednesday through Friday, the college will share a Food for the Soul Film series daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Register for the events here.

Elyria will hold its first Juneteenth celebration in Ely Square Saturday, June 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Events include a commemorative march, speakers, food trucks and more.

The March will begin at the corner of East Avenue and Depot Street behind Fifth Third Bank and end in Ely Square.

Later that day, the first Smart Set Memorial Game will be held at Thomas Shores South Rec Center. Pre-game acknowledgements begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the baseball game at 7 p.m. Free hot dogs and beverages will be offered while supplies last.

The Juneteenth Oberlin Executive Board will present its festival Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The focus this year is on the Second Line and releasing enslaved spirits to freedom.

The celebration will be located at the Underground Railroad Center-Station Square, behind the McDonald’s on South Main Street. The festival will include a parade with the African pride dancers, drum line, praise dancers and other local performers marching from Spring Street Park down Groveland Street to Pleasant Street and ending at the Underground Railroad Center. There will be games, face painting, raffles, vendors and food trucks.
