Summer Kits Will Keep Learning Going

posted 5/17/22 -- Children need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months.

Did you know that children can lose up to 2 months of knowledge and skills that were learned throughout the school year if they don’t practice them over the summer?

You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Your home is your child’s first and continual learning environment. As parents, you decide the family’s daily routines: when to get up, eat, play, do chores, visit friends, and go to bed.

The way you talk with your children makes a tremendous difference in how they think, how they feel about themselves, the language they learn, and the type of people they will become.

In order to help reduce summer learning loss and to encourage parent engagement, your Head Start child will be coming home with a backpack filled with hands-on learning tools and easy-to-follow instruction cards for parents.

Each bag will include the following:

  • A picture/story white board, eraser and dry erase marker
  • Box of 8 Colorations crayons
  • Rhyming cards
  • Assorted foam letters and numbers
  • Plastic scissors
  • Bottle of school glue
  • One spiral-bound journal
  • Magnifying glass
  • Three colorful scarves
  • 100 linking cubes in 10 colors
  • Three hand puppets for storytelling
  • Parent activity cards covering all domains of development (math, science, literacy, art, etc.)
  • Pack of white paper

We encourage families to take the time to continue to work on kindergarten readiness skills to reduce summer learning loss and have fun with your child this summer!

Remember….PLAY is children’s work! Bags will be distributed during the last week of school.
