Rain Damage Delays Move to Central Plaza

posted 4/28/22 -- Rain damage at the Central Plaza building at 1949 Broadway Ave. in Lorain has delayed the move of Head Start offices and classrooms.

Wind, snow and rain of the last month caused minor roof damage which also brought down new ceiling tiles in the completely remodeled former bank.

“The damage is relatively minor, but it was sad to see the freshly painted walls, new ceiling fixtures and flooring soaked in some areas,” said LCCAA President and CEO Jackie Boehnlein.

Building owner Jon Veard of United Properties, Inc., decided to replace the roof rather than repair it. The new roof will be installed within the next month and staff are now scheduled to move the first week of June, Boehnlein said.

A ribbon cutting and open house planned for May 12 will now be held June 30, she added.

“We will have three fully staged classrooms by the end of June and will give the community a true sense of how this historic site will serve children and families,” Boehnlein said.

The Central Plaza building will house three classrooms serving up to 60 children in addition to serving as a base for the eight home visitors that serve families in LCCAA’s Home-Based Head Start Program. Administrative offices, including the director and assistant director, will also be located in the building.
