Community Garden Gains Expert

posted 9/30/21 -- Master Gardner Barbie Blackhall has agreed to provide technical assistance for LCCAA’s Community Garden partnership at the Elyria South Library through the Ohio State University Extension.

OSU’s Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) program provides intensive training in horticulture to interested Ohio residents who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities for Ohio residents through their local OSU Extension county office.

Working with county Extension personnel, MGV’s provide educational services to their communities such as: answering gardening questions from the public; conducting plant clinics; gardening activities with children, senior citizens, or disabled persons; beautifying the community; developing community or demonstration gardens; and other horticultural activities.

Barbie is also the lead gardener at the Louisiana Avenue Memorial Garden in Elyria. The garden at the library is funded by LCCAA’s grant from the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act. Valued partners in the effort are Our F.A.M.I.L.Y and Hope for Futures as well as the library.

Partners hosted a pick event last week to share greens that were ready for harvest. For more photos, please visit our Facebook page. Community residents are free to pick from the garden at any time.
