Lorain Mom Saves for Car

posted 3/24/20 -- Taylor Ricks has a new-to-her 2012 Ford Escape thanks to participating in LCCAA’s By Car program.

The single mother of two lives in Lorain and borrowed her grandmother’s car for a while to get to her job at a nursing home in Westlake. Her previous vehicle was involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist.

Taylor’s cousin told her about the By Car program, which matches savings from earned income. Eligible clients have their savings matched 2 to 1 up to a total of $3,999. Participants take financial literacy courses as well as learning the costs of owning a vehicle and its proper maintenance.

Funding for the program goes quickly and Taylor had to wait for new funding to be released in 2020 before she could get her vehicle. Not only will she be driving to work with confidence, her two sons, Xavier, 12 and Isaiah, 6 are ready to ride as well.

"See if you qualify,” Taylor said of the program. “It definitely helped me a lot."

Taylor also learned a lot in the financial literacy class, especially about how to buy a home, which is her next goal.
