Third Senior Service Day Successful

posted 2/28/20 -- Lorain High School seniors served their community last week in the third annual Senior Service Day.

The event takes advantage of Ohio’s new mandatory ACT testing for high school juniors. While juniors are testing, seniors are expected to visit colleges, job shadow or perform community service. The students are able to choose their work site from a list organized by LCCAA Youth Services Coordinator Bobby Taylor.

“They’re able to provide not only a service to the community, but to show the value they have,” Taylor told the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

“Unfortunately, there is a big need out there,” senior Riana Bryner told the Lorain Morning Journal while working at The Haven Center in Lorain. “I wanted to help where there was a need.”

Lorain High Early College Academy Coordinator Matt Keilian and LHS Social Worker Elisha Neely were also instrumental in organizing the event.

“Our students exemplified and demonstrated exactly what they can do it presented the opportunity, Keilian said. “Everyone most definitely stepped up.”

Keilian added the event will help prepare the students for life after high school.

“It’s important that they give of themselves to the community to establish those relationships,” he told the Morning Journal. “Once they are out of the high school, they are going to need those relationships.”

In addition to The Haven Center, other worksites included: Neighborhood Alliance’s Senior Center in Oberlin, Oberlin Community Services in Oberlin, The Woods on French Creek in Avon, LIFE a Dementia Foundation in Vermilion, Salvation Army in Lorain, Horizon Education Center’s Southside Center in Lorain, Lorain Palace Theater, Friendship APL and Angels Horse Haven Rescue.
