Head Start Classes Start Next Week

posted 8/26/19 -- Classes at LCCAA Head Start begin next week, Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Teachers and staff are spending time in training learning new skills and gearing up for the year. Speakers Brad Palmer and Joe Baker visited the agency last week to present to Head Start and all agency staff.

Palmer, a professor at Stark State College, discussed communications skills including verbal and non-verbal signals and the importance of listening. Baker spoke about workplace safety. He is a training leader with Presidential Consultants.

Head Start Director Shauna Matelski, Ed.D., also conducted training for Head Start staff regarding Ohio's opioid crisis. The training reviewed current terminology, symptoms of opioid overdose and several statistics, including the increase in babies born with exposure to high levels of opioids.

"Because we work with so many families, Head Start felt the need to start developing a plan of action," Matelski said. "According to statistics, the likelihood that this crisis is affecting someone we are bringing into the program is very high."
