Hair Care Workshop Engages Fathers

posted 3/21/19 -- LCCAA Head Start works hard to involve and engage fathers in the lives of Head Start students.

Last week, two special events were designed to make fathers feel welcome in the centers and provide them with practical skills they can use to grow closer to their daughters.

Daddy Hair Care was held at both Hopkins Locke in Lorain and Griswold in Elyria. Each center welcomed two local stylists to instruct fathers in braiding, pony tails and more.

One father also brought his father. Mark Jones Sr. and Mark Jones Jr. attended with junior’s daughters Leila and Myleah, both 3, born 11 months apart.

“It’s been a while,” Senior joked. “I need a refresher course.”

“I know my daughter wants me here,” said Junior.

Other fathers looked forward to being able to style their daughters’ hair without calling on other family members.

Mather Szychowicz, a single dad from Vermillion, brought his two daughters, Sophia, 5 and June, 6.

Marquis Harston looks forward to not bothering his mother with questions about how to style five-year-old Davonia’s hair when her mother is at work.

Some dads just want to help out.

“I have two girls now, so I really have to learn to do hair to help mom,” said Dashawn, who attended with his four-year-old Anadia while mom and a newborn daughter were at home.

Stylists for the events were Tia Wertz, Tieya Riggins, Kimyatta Hawthorne and Hortensia Agosto.
