Father of Head Start Dies

posted 2/1/19 -- Dr. Edward Zigler, known by many as the “Father of Head Start,” died Thursday, February 7.

Dr. Zigler, 88, will be remembered for his curiosity, tenacity and nurturing heart which led him to create Head Start, said Yasmina Vinci, Executive Director of the National Head Start Association.

“Without him, the disruptive innovation in early childhood development that is Head Start would never have succeeded,” Vinci said. “Indeed, he protected and nourished Head Start during its early years, envisioning new ways the program could expand for greater impact on American life.”
