LCCAA to Provide Cooling Assistance Beginning July 1st

posted 5/15/13 -- A program which helps low-income seniors and Ohioans with medical conditions stay cool during the hot summer months will begin on July 1, 2013. LCCAA will be accepting applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Summer Crisis Program starting on July 1 through August 31, 2013. The Summer Crisis Program will provide cooling assistance to households with incomes up to 175% of the 2013 Federal Poverty Guidelines (click here), and with a member age 60 or older, or with a documented, qualifying medical condition.

Ken Novack, Director of Housing Services, says the program will offer a maximum benefit of $175 to assist income-eligible households facing a disconnect notice on their electric bill service. The maximum benefit for customers served by a rural electric cooperative is $250. The program will also offer air conditioners.

“We can make a payment on one of their electric bills during the months of July and August, just to give them that extra boost that might be necessary, especially if they are running their air conditioner.” says Novack.

The Summer Crisis Program has become a crucial tool for many Ohioans suffering through the heat. Those who apply are going through a variety of financial difficulties and just need a little help.

Novack adds, “Maybe they’re having problems making their mortgage payment or trouble making rent – it doesn’t matter. If we can help out with a utility bill, maybe making those payments will be a little bit easier.”

Applications will be taken beginning July 1, 2013 at 401 Broadway Avenue in Lorain Monday – Friday from 8: 00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and in Wellington at 115 Willard Memorial Square Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Phone calls to schedule appointments will be accepted beginning on June 17, 2013. New this year, is the toll-free Energy Services hotline (1-855-806-9620) that individuals should call to schedules appointments. The hotline also answers frequently asked questions, including program guidelines and required documentation. Click here for Summer Cooling Program FAQs
