2017 Food Pantry Partners Announced

posted 11/1/17 -- Local food pantries who have become a “constant coping strategy” will once again receive funding from Lorain County Community Action Agency’s Community Services Block Grant.

For the fifth year, LCCAA will partner with food pantries around Lorain County to boost their inventory for their busiest time of year.

“We started this program in response to cuts made to food stamps in 2013,” said Frank Prihoda, Director of Planning and Community Services. “From our 2017 Community Needs Survey, Food Pantries were the number one service respondents stated that they would be using in the next 12 months.”

This year’s 32 partners include churches, civic organizations, and the area agency on aging. The people they serve must be living at or below 125% of the Federal Poverty Line. The funding can be used only for grocery items – both edible and non-edible – and is provided on a reimbursement basis.

“These awards are intended to help with the food pantries’ busiest time,” Prihoda added. “Dependence on local food pantries has become a way of life for too many people. Everything we can do to stretch each dollar is important.”

Annually, the partnership helps more than 31,000 people, at least 10% of whom are senior citizens, Prihoda added.
