Federal Grant Extends Class Timeposted 2/2/17 -- LCCAA Head Start students are spending more time in class thanks to a new grant from the Administration of Children and Families (ACF), part of the federal department of Health and Human Services.
The funding, effective for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year, allows LCCAA to increase class time from 3.5 hours to 8 hours each day at its Hamilton and Cascade Head Start centers. The classes remain four days per week.
"Emerging research tells us when children attend high quality programs for more days and longer hours they are better prepared for school and have improved outcomes," said Head Start Director Shauna Matelski.
The additional time provides teachers with greater flexibility and more time per learning activity, Matelski said. It will also improve implementation of health and wellness initiatives.
