Shuttle Service Extended at Henderson Bridgeposted 6/26/16 -- Lorain County Community Action Agency’s shuttle for pedestrians using the Henderson Bridge to get to work will continue through the rest of the summer.
The free service will operates seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and has given nearly 300 rides since May 19.
Rehabilitation of the bridge across the Black River is expected to last until October. The bridge connects two low-income neighborhoods and residents use it to walk to work. LCCAA President and CEO Jackie Boehnlein cited the lack of public transportation in Lorain County as a barrier for residents to get jobs outside of their immediate neighborhood.
The sidewalk closed at the end of March, forcing pedestrians to put themselves in danger by walking in the traffic lanes. The alternative pedestrian route is the Erie Street bridge which adds at least two miles and forty minutes to a walker’s commute, she added.
The shuttle is parked on one side of the bridge or the other and crosses about every 15 minutes, Boehnlein said. The shuttle driver’s phone number is posted directly on the pedestrian barricades.
