LCCAA offers Shuttle over Henderson Bridge

posted 5/18/16 -- LCCAA is pleased to announce that pedestrians using the Henderson Bridge to get to work will have shuttle service beginning Thursday, May 19 at 6:00AM. The free service will operate seven days per week. Operating hours will be 6:00AM to 8:00PM.

“We figured out how to do this on $400 a day,” said LCCAA CEO Jackie Boehnlein. “Once we knew we could make it work, getting financial support just seemed to come together,” reports Jackie Boehnlein, President and CEO.

Rehabilitation of the bridge across the Black River is expected to last until October.

“It is our understanding based on information from the Ohio Department of Transportation that a construction changeover planned for late June will restore pedestrian access. We have secured shuttle funding through the end of June and are prepared to extend shuttle service longer if necessary,” Boehnlein said.

The bridge connects two low-income neighborhoods and residents use it to walk to work, Boehnlein explained, citing the lack of public transportation in Lorain County as a barrier for residents to get jobs outside of their immediate neighborhood. Our main concern is making sure that working families are able to maintain their employment, she added.

The shuttle will be parked on one side of the bridge or the other and will cross about every 15 minutes, Boehnlein said. Signs about the shuttle service will be posted directly on the pedestrian barricades. The signs will include a phone number to reach the shuttle driver during daily operating hours.
