Statewide Poverty Rates Stagnantposted 5/13/16 -- More than a sixth of Ohioans live below the federal poverty line, according to the latest State of Poverty in Ohio report issued by the Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA) in conjunction with Community Action Month.
Lorain County rates are slightly higher than the state and national averages.Poverty statistics are largely unchanged from last year and advocates point to the challenges of rising out of poverty. A child raised in poverty has more than a 1 in 3 chance of spending his whole life in poverty.
"Staying out of poverty is not just about making all the right decisions," said Philip E. Cole, Executive Director of OACAA. "Unexpected unemployment, sudden illnesses, or a number of other circumstances can move a family from a comfortable financial position to one that is unstable." View the complete report here.
